The Amateur Radio Vertical Handbook
The Amateur Radio Vertical Handbook by Cpt Paul Lee USN (ret.) N6PL. This book is a classic. Rated #1 by W1JCC. Paul Lee spent years in the Navy travelling from duty station to duty station, installing, testing and trying new ideas for antennas. The book begins with a comprehensive overview of verticals and the theory of how they work and how to optimize their performance. Chapter two gives you the basic principles of vertical antennas. Lee then discusses matching and base impedance's. Like Sevick, Lee also made extensive investigation of short verticals and ways to make them work nearly as well as larger antennas.
Also covered in separate chapters are directional design, stacking verticals, broadband designs, the UNIPOLE (My antenna of choice for low band operation) the effects of earth and chapters on the antennas Lee used during his ham career The Mark I-IV series. Also included is a helpful Q and A section that answers many of the "oft-asked" questions. I sincerely believe that this is the BEST book ever done on vertical antennas. I also corresponded with Lee and he was above all a gentleman who was eager to share his knowledge with others. If you don't have this book in your library, you are missing a true classic.
